Just a House… Much more than that

Lucy's Harbor City family homeThe seminal event that changed my 6th grade life was a real estate sale.

My parents sold our 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath two story house in Harbor City and bought a 5 bedroom 2.5 bath three story with a view in The Hollywood Riviera, South Torrance. That sale rocked my world.

We moved the summer of ’76, as I recall. Even though the move was only across town, I was changing schools, which meant leaving behind my best friend and a neighborhood I truly loved. I remember being in the courtyard of our old house wondering what to expect. How is this move going to change my comfortable life?

Before too long I realized the move was hard for everyone, not just me. We became closer as a family. My new school, though scary at first, was cool. There was a family of boys our age living down the street and we became great friends. The house became home and stayed that way long after I’d moved away and bought my first place.

I’ve recently been thinking about the emotions empty nesters feel when they downsize. I wasn’t prepared for the emotions I’d felt when my own parents finally made the decision. Once again the move was hard on everyone, from my parents to the grandkids, who have known the home as our family gathering place for decades.

I am currently helping a lovely woman who is a classic “empty nester”. The house is too big, the stairs are too much, and the kids are all gone. What’s wonderful for her is that her kids are all helping with every step. They love her very much and I know why. With tears in her eyes we discuss the move but she knows it is time. I can only hope she finds comfort in working with me.

According to the Deptartment of Health and Human Services’ Administration on Aging, by 2030, people 65 and older will represent 19 percent of the population, compared with 12.4 percent in the year 2000. I can’t overestimate the need for a compassionate agent that takes the time to make the transition more comfortable.

Please call me at (310) 293-4866 if you know of anyone that could use my help in re-settling to a right-sized home.
